If you’re building a new home or renovating an existing building, chances are you’ll need to make a decision about doors. There are a wide range of doors, including custom wood doors, fire rated doors, hollow metal doors, pre hung doors, and slab doors.

What are pre hung doors, you might ask? A pre hung door is a door that is already hanging on a frame, so it can be opened and closed before being installed into your home. These self-contained units consist of a door slab, hinges and frame. Slab doors, on the other hand, are simply rectangular slabs of wood without hinges; they need to be attached to the building's structure by a renovator.

Pre hung doors, though they are more expensive than slab doors, are useful when your home is undergoing restoration work. They are a good option when there is no existing door frame, or when a frame is warped or defective in some way, making it hard for a traditional slab to be hung from it. Pre hung doors also make good exterior doors because they come fully sealed, so there’s chance of the weather creeping in.
